The game is set in the a comedic, post-scarcity universe, where players control a series of prisoners aboard a derelict spaceship. The primary objective is to navigate the Sargasso Nebula, a dangerous region of space filled with abandoned vessels and hostile entities, to gather resources and components.
Gameplay Mechanics
Void Bastards combines procedural generation with a resource management system. Each playthrough involves a new prisoner with unique traits and a distinct set of challenges.
- Exploration and Combat: Players board procedurally generated ships, scavenging for essential supplies like fuel, food, and crafting materials. Encounters with various enemy types, each with specific behaviors and vulnerabilities, require tactical engagement using a range of firearms and gadgets.
- Crafting System: Collected components are used to craft and upgrade weapons, tools, and ship modules. This allows for customization of playstyle and adaptation to different threats.
- Resource Management: Fuel and food are finite resources, necessitating careful planning of routes through the nebula. Running out of either results in the death of the current prisoner and the activation of a new one, carrying over some progress.
- Permadeath with Progression: While individual prisoners are subject to permadeath, meta-progression systems ensure that unlocked blueprints and strategic advantages persist, making subsequent runs incrementally more achievable.
