198X is a coming-of-age story set in Suburbia, located just outside the City, during the year 198X. You follow the journey of Kid, a teenager navigating the transition between innocent youth and the responsibilities of adulthood. The narrative begins when Kid finds a local arcade, where the character encounters various worlds.

You experience gameplay through five arcade stages that include shooting, driving, jumping, fighting, and role-playing. These segments feature cinematic pixel-art storytelling. As you master moves and defeat demons within these games, Kid grows stronger. During this process, the boundaries between reality and the games begin to fade. Every visit to the arcade allows Kid to find new meaning, and each game provides a potential new life for the cost of one credit.
